Asteroids is a video arcade game released in 1979 by Atari Inc. The Asteroids game was one of the most popular and influential games of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. Asteroids uses vector graphics and a two-dimensional view that wraps around in both screen axes. The player controls a spaceship in an asteroid field which is periodically traversed by flying saucers. The object of the game is to shoot and destroy asteroids and saucers while not colliding with either, or being hit by the saucers’ counter-fire.
In this game you are the little ship that starts in the center. Your goal is to destroy all of the asteroids in the asteroid field. When you have completed that task you are rewarded with… more asteroids!
Large asteroids will break up into two medium asteroids when shot. Medium ones will break up into two small ones. The small asteroids will be incenerated and dissapear when shot.
Watch out for UFOs, they are worth a lot of points but they shoot back! Large UFO’s will fire randomly, small ones will shoot directly at you.
The world record of 41,336,440 points in Asteroids was set by 15-year-old Scott Safran in 1982.
